Citizen Castalia Quartz
Why We Love It
There’s a lot to love with this funky figured timepiece; there are a good handful of distinguished components that come together to make a beautiful whole. Its sinuous and sculptural case, blue sunburst dial, Dauphine hands, and Cabochon-style crown to name a few. This is quite the vivacious design that is certainly representative of a vivacious moment in history. And with its quartz movement, it is just as easy to maintain as it is easy to love.
About the Brand
Citizen, over a century in its existence, has a peculiar and interesting history. Its beginnings correspond with a time when Japan was witnessing increasing influence from the West. Its founding is actually born out of the collaboration between Japanese-born Kamekichi Yamazaki, founder of the Shokosha Watch Research Institute, and Swiss-born Rodolphe Schmid in the 1910s. With influence from their primary investor, Count Goto Shinpei, the brand would take on the name ‘Citizen’ as a demonstration of its objective to be understood as the cosmopolitan watch suitable for citizens of the world. In the 1970s, the advent of quartz movements shook up the watch industry on the whole, an event that Citizen was at the center of being a premier manufacturer of quartz timepieces in addition to its reputable and reliable mechanical watches.
